KidRobotik (Interview)

We get talking to KidRobotik of Glasgow about his view on Hiphop in Scotland and various other aspects of life.

How long have you been making music?
I have been writing, recording and producing music now for the best part of 7 years. Maybe even 8, I lose count haha

How many songs /albums have you released to date?
I have released a total of 6 projects, which have either been solo, collaborative or instrumental, some fall under a secret alias, but you can find that if you really want to.

Can you tell us about your new project and the background and inspirations behind it?
My new project will be my first full length solo album, and my good friend andy martin will be taking care of the production side of things. We worked together on my guillotine ep and since have been exchanging ideas. Don't sleep on the boy, his production is crazy, and this album will be a showcase of that... Along with me spouting shit over the top of it haha. Not all of the tracks are conceptual, though there are a few in there which have been influenced by some pretty big changed in my life which have occurred in the past year.

How have you ended up in the music industry?
I ended up making music because it always grabbed me, when I was young I always wanted to be a drummer, then when I was around 10 my dad bought me a bass guitar. I then went on to play bita and bobs of guitar, piano, mandolin and ukulele haha. So its something I've always wanted, when hip hop came into my life, it all just fell into place.

What do you think of the music industry at the moment?
I think the music industry is in a great place right now, underground hip hop seems to be slowly creeping back into the mainstream which can only be a good thing. I think these days everybody wants to be the first one to jump on that new wave, so the general public now pays more attention to what's going on behind the scenes rather than what's put out in front of them !

Who inspires you when you make your music?
My music is influenced by too many artists and genres to list, but lately I've drawn a lot of inspiration from the whole "beast coast" movement. Guys like joey badass and capital steez, rest in peace, from pro era. Underachievers and Flatbush zombies too ! Also tde, Kendrick Lamar, schoolboy q and absoul! Recently I've also rekindled my love for dub/reggae so no doubt that will play a big part in my production again haha.

If you were one of the Seven Dwarves, which one would you be?
Dopey cause im stoned as Fuck.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your Career?
So far I've done tracks with the likes of Louie, of deadlife, all my ta boys,Loki, becca Starr, becci Wallace, Mog, kayce one, nity gritz, gasp, lady killa from Manchester, and I've got a few up my sleeve on this new album ;)

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
In the future I think ill just do what I do now, and see who comes along and is willing, I really don't chase after collaborations as I really only work with people I know personally, or folk I'm really a fan of. If I had the chance to work with anyone right now though I'd say madlib for sure, so yeah, gimme a beat 'lib .

What was the first album u bought?
The first tape my dad ever gave me was presidents of the USA - peaches haha. But I think one of the first albums I bought with my own money would have been like korn or something when I was well young, and im pretty sure the first hip hop album I bought was the mouse and the mask by dangerdoom.

Whats your favorite song at the moment?
Nate dogg - I got love. Just can't get enough of that track, prime smoking soundtrack, if not that then gift of gab - way of the light.

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your drawer?
My original press Beatles white album vinyl for sure.

What do you think of TV music talent show competitions?
They suck and exploit idiots. Get them to Fuck, if you have real talent, sooner or later it will be recognized and embraced. Just stick to your graft and push.

What do you do when your not making music?
Work, smoke, drink and make music.

How many hats do you own?
Fuck I've lost count, in my room now though about 5.

Whats your favorite takeaway?
Homewok which is now called Jackie Chung. Dopest Chinese ever, hit it up if you're in the west end for some of that deep fried shredded chicken in hot and spicy sauce, jheeeeze!!

What's your favourite Swear word?

How many followers do you have on twitter?
305, follow me fuckers @kidrobotik

How do you feel about Scottish Hip Hop at the moment?
I think its in a good place, don't get me wrong, the fact its so accessible now has opened the floodgates of terrible rappers, but also created a good few diamonds in the rough. I think it can only grow better, the fact all the scheme kids have caught on now really does help, the same people who laughed at me for doing this in school now wanna partake, and they're the folk that will share it about on phones/web and show people. We need the locals to feel us first before the rest can.

Anything else you would like to add?
Follow me cunts ! Watch out for all my upcoming projects ! Coming at Ye real soon ! And don't call me fucking kid robotik when you meet me, my names Ryan.......
